Johnson & Wales University Harborside Recreation Center
Providence, Rhode Island
RGB designed this athletics and student recreation center built in 1996. The award winning project was designed to communicate the energy and diversity of the growing, multicultural student body that has made Johnson & Wales one of the country's top career universities. The grand entrance, with its soaring, sun filled atrium, attracts students from across the campus where they gather during the day or after classes to form teams for pick-up basketball games or for a chat. It is one hub of activity at the campus.
In 2011, RGB was commissioned to renovate the recreational center. Renovations were completed in 2013 at a cost of $510,000. RGB designed renovations to the existing lobby and mezzanine areas. The design brings new life to the space through the addition of wood veneer panels and other finishes, as well as a new reception area and a new home for the University athletics Hall of Fame and trophy cabinet.
